USE Committee Survey
Updated On: Oct 274, 2014

Members,

The Association’s (USE) Uniform, Safety, and Equipment Committee has been involved in negotiations with the Department concerning the selection of a new duty weapon and its caliber for some time.  These discussions have resulted in a recent debate concerning which caliber, 9mm or 40 cal, and which firearm, Glock or Sig Sauer DAK handgun, is better for the Department as a whole.

During these meetings we have also discussed;

  1. Changes to the off-duty and secondary weapons policy, which would greatly expand the types and calibers of firearms Officers can carry in those capacities.

  1. The implantation of a Patrol Rifle Program for Police Officers, not just supervisors, and

  1. Increasing the frequency and types of firearms training.

I am asking that each of you take a few minutes and complete a short survey, located on the SLPOA website under on-Line voting, indicating your preference concerning a new duty weapon and its caliber and also addressing how important the brand and caliber of the handgun we carry is in comparison to a Patrol Rifle Program, increased training, and an expanded off-duty weapon policy.

The Department has expressed its desire to act quickly on this issue and we would like to have your opinion before we met again with the Department next week; therefore, this survey will end Sunday at midnight.

As always, if you have any questions or want to share any additional opinions you may have on this topic feel free to call, or email me, your Division Rep, or any member of the USE Committee (Joe Mader, Lance Coats, Tom Mayer Sr, Joe Lankford, Martin Garcia, Mike Mathews, and Mike Lowery).

The survey is included below for your review and/or for those who wish to relay their preferences directly to their division representative, or a member of the USE Committee.

1) What caliber sidearm should the department utilize?  For comparison purposes, regardless of caliber, only rounds that passed FBI testing for performance and penetration will be considered. Our current duty round in 9mm passed FBI testing.

        A. 40 Cal

        B. 9mm

        C. No preference

2) What brand sidearm should the Department utilize?  For comparison purposes; the Sig Sauer 229 DAK model has a 6.5 pound trigger pull, weight of 32 ounces, 4” barrel, and holds 14 (13 + 1) rounds in 9mm configuration.

A Glock 17 model would also have a 6.5 pound trigger pull, weight of 25 ounces, a 4 ½” barrel and holds 18 (17 + 1) rounds in 9mm configuration.  Both firearms would have night sights and a light rail.

Our current issue sidearm has a 9 pound trigger pull, a weight of 34 ounces and a 5” barrel.

        A. Sig Sauer

        B. Glock

        C. No preference

3) Of the items listed below, what is most important to you?  Pick One

        A. The caliber of the sidearm we carry, (9mm or 40 cal)

B. The brand of the sidearm we carry, (Sig Sauer or Glock)

C. The implantation of a Patrol Rifle Program for Police Officers, not just supervisors.

        D. Increased frequency and types of firearms training.

E. Expanding the off duty and secondary firearm policy to allow Officers to carry any revolver 38 special or larger or any semi-auto 380 caliber or larger, off duty or as a secondary firearm while on duty.

  1. Of the items listed below, what is least important to you?  Pick One
