27th Ward Committeewoman Pamela Boyd
Calls for His Resignation
The Democratic Committeewoman of the 27th Ward has called on Alderman Chris Carter to resign following his arrest by St. Louis County Police on suspicion of spousal abuse. "I worked closely with our former Alderman, the late Gregory Carter, and believe the best thing for our current Alderman can do is to resign and concentrate on his personal issues and family. He cannot effectively represent our ward with this cloud hanging over his head," said Boyd.
Alderman Carter was taken into custody on May 10th and held for questioning in reference to an incident of spousal abuse that his wife says took place at a home in St. Louis County on April 30th. Alderman Carter was stopped for driving on an expired license plate and for having a missing front license plate. During the traffic stop they saw he was wanted for questioning in the spousal abuse matter. Authorities in St. Louis County have not yet said if a summons will be issued.
"Spouse abuse is an intolerable act and it had been general knowledge in my opinion that Alderman Carter has exhibited anger management issues towards others. I believe he needs to concentrate on getting the help he may need. If St. Louis County decides to bring charges against Alderman Carter in the case that will further distract him and make serving effectively as our Alderman impossible," Boyd added.
Boyd also said she was troubled by other factors surrounding the incident. She questioned why there was such a delay in authorities finding Carter for questioning after the incident, what Alderman Carter and his wife were doing apparently living in a home outside of the ward and outside the City of St. Louis, and that as a public official, he would be showing disregard for the law and driving on expired license plates. "Women are the majority of voters in the 27th Ward and the thought of anyone accused of physical violence against their spouse is especially abhorrent to women, wives, mothers and grandmothers. Alderman Carter has a great deal to answer for, including to God, and his resignation should be the first step," said Boyd.
