SLPOA Members:
Members will be receiving a refund check from the SLPOA for excess funds which were inadvertently deducted from your bi-weekly pay check regarding our FOP dues.
In May of 2009, after a measure was supported by the membership to accept the an assessment sought by the FOP, a dollar amount of $2.29 was deducted for FOP dues from each of your paychecks. This amount was inaccurately determined.
The original FOP dues, per paycheck, was $0.75. The dues increase resulted in an additional amount of $0.38 be deducted; totaling $1.13 per pay period. However, because the SLPOA requires a by-law change to pay the assessment, the association could not remove the additional funding from your paycheck until a vote was taken.
This meant the association, to stay current with the FOP, advanced the necessary dollar amount on each member’s behalf. After the measure was passed by the body of the SLPOA, a dollar amount was to be determined above the $1.13, to be withheld from your paycheck, to recapture the monies advanced by the SLPOA on your behalf. Once these monies were recaptured the dollar amount deducted to cover your FOP dues should have returned to $1.13.
Herein lies the problem. Due to a miscalculation, the dollar amount, $2.29, removed from your paycheck, starting in May of 2009, was more than what it should have been. Additionally, this dollar amount was withdrawn for a period of time longer than it should have been; a total of 19 pay periods.
I discovered these errors in February 2010 and brought them to the attention of the Executive Board at an emergency meeting. After conferring with our accountant, the Executive Board determined that the proper action to take was to reimburse each member the amount overdrawn.
Fraternally,
Thomas J. Walsh,
President
